Holy cow I just found a new favorite website. Asknature.org is a website dedicated to biomimicry, (using nature to inspire solutions to technical problems). This project is the brain baby of Janine Benyus, the go-to-gal when it comes to biomimicry. She wanted this website to “organize the world’s biological information by design and engineering function.” You can browse the website and find interesting facts about natures problem solving techniques, or look for a specific solution by using the search box in the upper right corner of the webpage. It says “How would nature…” and you would finish the sentence. So if you were working on your garden you could ask “How would nature fertilize?”, and get an eco-friendly answer. You can also find a list of products that have been inspired by nature such as bulletproof plastic, solar cells, and vascular wound dressing. Janine’s hope is that the website helps designers and engineers integrate sustainability into their projects by making it easier to solve technical issues. To quote the website: “It’s amazing what a 3.8-billion-year head start can do when it comes to problem solving.” For some more in-depth coverage, check out treehugger, here and here
